General Information
At the Galatasaray University Faculty of Law, students undergo a one-year preparatory language education if they do not possess proficiency in French.
Following the preparatory year, the undergraduate program is completed over four academic years, each consisting of two semesters, amounting to a total of eight semesters. According to the current regulations, students are required to maintain regular attendance, and a course-based passing system is implemented within our Faculty.
(See: Galatasaray University Faculty of Law Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations, Official Gazette [O.G.], 24.07.2010, Issue: 27651).
Students may pursue Master’s and Ph.D. programs in the fields of Public Law and Private Law, as well as non-thesis Master's programs in Economic Law, Sports Law, Human Rights Law, and Health Law.
Since the 2022–2023 academic year, the Faculty of Law has had an enrollment capacity of sixty students. Twenty-five of these students are selected through a distinct "internal examination" administered by Galatasaray University. In accordance with a bilateral agreement between Turkey and France, this exam is exclusively open to senior students from high schools in Turkey that provide education in French. The remaining thirty-five students are admitted through the centralized placement examination conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Additionally, a specific quota of one seat is allocated for high school valedictorians, and two seats are designated for international students.
Turkish Private Law is largely inspired by Swiss Law, whereas Turkish Public Law is fundamentally derived from French Law. Taking this historical context into consideration, the curricula and instructional framework at the Galatasaray University Faculty of Law are designed to be bilingual (Turkish and French). Consequently, academicians from Francophone countries are appointed alongside Turkish faculty members.
Currently, in addition to French faculty members, our Faculty employs numerous Turkish professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and research assistants. Furthermore, a Cooperation Convention was signed in 2002 between the Faculty of Law of the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and our Faculty. This convention facilitates not only scientific collaboration but also academic staff exchanges between the two institutions.
As a rule, the language of instruction is Turkish for courses pertaining to the application of Turkish Law, and French for all other disciplines. English serves as the compulsory second foreign language. Beyond these, a third foreign language is also offered. When deemed necessary, depending on the nature of the course, the language of instruction may be English, and such courses may be delivered by visiting international faculty.
Within the framework of the international student exchange program SOCRATES-ERASMUS, our Faculty has established bilateral agreements with numerous esteemed institutions, including Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) University, Paris II (Panthéon-Assas) University, Tours François Rabelais University, Picardie Jules Verne University, Montpellier University, Nantes University, Orléans University, Angers University, Rennes I University, Rouen University, Strasbourg University, University of Neuchâtel, University of Fribourg, Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) The Netherlands: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Urbino Germany: University of Tübingen. Through these agreements, our students have the opportunity to complete part of their education in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. Similarly, the convention signed with the University of Neuchâtel Faculty of Law facilitates student exchanges, particularly at the postgraduate level.
Galatasaray University is a State university that provides education in foreign languages.
